REFUGE
Bas Princen’s photographic survey of Istanbul, Beirut, Amman, Cairo and Dubai has been commissioned and produced as part of the collaborative research platform “diwan”, initiated and curated by Philipp Misselwitz and Can Altay, and part of the Refuge exhibition of the 4th IABR, Open City.

Internationally known for his subtle yet accurate photographs of urban conditions all around the world, Princen constructs his images meticulously as a way of urban/ architectural research, and reaches an image that is at once poetic and highly informative. With the help of local guidance from institutional partners in the region (Bilgi University Istanbul, American University Beirut, German Jordanian University Amman, American University Cairo and United Arab Emirates University UAE) Princen has constructed intimate portraits of the five cities: How does fragmentation and polarization of urban space affect the lives of ordinary citizens? What new spatial typologies emerge? Bas Princen’s investigation will result in a unique photographic exhibition, shown at the 4th IABR in Rotterdam, as well as in Istanbul, Beirut, Amman, Cairo and Dubai.
